Organic Wine

In today’s society the public is paying more attention to what is green and organic. What does this mean for wine?
Organic wines are considered such when vineyard practices (grapes grown without using artificial fertilizers, pesticides etc.) and winemaking techniques (i.e. little or no wine manipulation by reverse osmosis, flavor additives etc.) are in line with their Country of origin certification standards. The certification criteria may vary by country, making it difficult to establish a worldwide standard for organic wines. Although, winemakers may or may not certify their wine as organic for several reasons; from the cost of certification, to the long process to meet the listed criteria or simply because of marketing purposes. A big debate has been raised about the use of sulfites, which can reduce shelf life and affect flavor.
Although, there is no clear label definition for organic wine and there is yet to be a worldwide standard to define it, on a positive note, more and more wineries are taking into consideration a more responsible and sustainable approach to making wine by helping reduce chemical use and energy consumption.
